Research Grants Programme

The research grants are intended to promote anaesthesia–related research in Europe, and to encourage anaesthesiologists to extend the frontiers of their practice or understanding. Priority will be given to topics that have no alternative sources of funding.

Applications are sought for the following:

  • Project grants of up to 60,000 euros each, to support work of up to two years duration.
  • Research support grants for amounts up to 15,000 euros to assist work in progress or pilot studies.

Applications are invited for the following fields:

  1. Clinical research
  2. Experimental research
  3. Patient safety

The areas of priority and the number and size of the grants may change from year to year.

Grants applications must be received no later than September 4 of the year before the year in which the grants are awarded.  Late applications will not be accepted. Projects can be for up to 2 years. The total sum requested must not exceed the grant amounts on offer. Funds may not be used for indirect costs (overheads) or for travel. New applicants should seek guidance from those experienced in experimental design and preparation of grant applications. Please follow the Guidelines for Grant Application carefully.

The names of the successful applicants are approved at the meeting of the Board of Directors of the ESA at the end of that year and then posted on the ESA website. The winners receive the Award’s certification during the following Annual Meeting of the ESA and will be provided with free registration to the Meeting.

At Euroanaesthesia, a 90 min session is held which ESA grant winners (grants up to 60,000 euros) from 3 years earlier are asked in a 20 min talk (plus questions) to present their research findings. The winners of the 2010 Research Grant Programme (grants up to 60,000 euros) have been asked to present their findings at Euroanaesthesia 2013.

The grant recipients (grants up to 60,000 euros) should submit a short scientific and financial report every year (using the 'Research Grant - Interim Report Form') by January 31st and the final report (using the ‘Research Grant - Final Report Form’) within a period of 3 years from the inception of the grant.

The grant recipients (grants up to 15,000 euros) should submit the final report (using the ‘Research Grant - Final Report Form') within a period of 2 years from the inception of the grant.

All resulting publications and presentations should acknowledge the support of the Research Grant Programme of the European Society of Anaesthesiology.
