By-Laws proposal 5/16/2011 3:37:00 PM

Dear Members of the ESA,

In your papers for this year’s General Assembly in Amsterdam, you will see an agenda item on changes to the Society’s By-Laws and I felt it sensible to outline the proposed changes, the thinking behind them and the implications for you all.

At the request of Council and the Board, a task force was established after the Helsinki Meeting to review the current By-Laws of the ESA. It had always been the intention to do this after the first five year’s of the Society’s existence, to examine the current structure in the light of our experience and to see whether it could be improved in line with the declared aims of the ESA.

As the first elected President of the ESA, I was asked to Chair the Task Force, whose members included the current President, the Vice-President (either the Immediate Past-President or the President-elect), the Secretary, the Chairman of NASC and the Executive Director. We have met on four occasions to develop our ideas and have shared our proposals with Council, the NASC Committee, the Board of Directors and the Presidents of the National Societies, along the way. As a result of these consultation meetings, our recommendations have been developed and modified, producing the proposed changes to the Society’s By-Laws which are now being sent out to you all, prior to a vote being taken at the General Assembly.

With best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Sir Peter Simpson
Chairman, ESA By-Laws Task Force
